Quinta do Lago South Course |
Designed by William Mitchell from the USA and opened in 1974, the Quinta do Lago South course is probably the best known course in the Algarve primarily because it has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times. The terrain is similar to the North course, gently undulating, and is based on sandy Algarvean soil covered with pine trees, heather, broom and many beautiful wild flowers.
This course incorporates superb bunkering and several breathtaking lakes, favouring the long hitter. Although both anti-clockwise loops, the first nine favours a draw, while the second favours a fade from the tee. Perhaps the most memorable hole is the 200-metre par 3 fifteenth with its scenic lake, long wooden bridge and large green set in amongst the trees.
